SMOKING CESSATION CLINIC

Cigarette smoking remains the leading cause of preventable premature morbidity and mortality all over the world. A lifelong smoker has about a one in three chance of dying prematurely from a complication of smoking. In country like India, tobacco smokers are increasing in number. There are more than 40 health related problems due to smoking, amongst them Cardiovascular disease, Cerebrovascular stroke, Cancer (lung, larynx ...), COPD are common cause of poor health and death. Smoking not only affect the smoker's health but also responsible for health problems to his spouse, particularly pregnant woman, and children.

Smoking cessation is helpful at any age. Though many of the smokers want to quit, but most of them fail because of low willingness, threat of symptoms due to stopping it, presence of psycho-social problems and lack of information. There significant increase in quit rate if help taken from medical personnel. We have specific programme for smoking cessation which we modify for individual patient. Proper counseling is utmost important for long term success in smoking cessation and for few patients counseling alone may be sufficient (particularly in presence of severe disease). However, most of the patients require pharmacological support to quit smoking. Pharmacological support to quit smoking is well accepted and standard tool. Most of the smokers are able to maintain quitting with the help of this programme and leaving healthier life.
